Itinerary
Day 1: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa Cliffs)
We will pick you up from your hotel in Ulaanbaatar. Your adventure begins with a road trip straight into the heart of the steppe. Watch the landscape shift from green fields to rocky desert as you head south (approx. 6-7 hours).
By late afternoon, youʼll reach Tsagaan Suvarga, the spectacular “White Stupa Cliffs.ˮ Formed from an ancient seabed, these eroded formations glow white, pink, and orange under the setting sun. Take a walk along the rim, breathe in the silence, and let the vastness sink in.
Accommodation: Ger camp
Meals included: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Yolyn Am (Lammergeier Valley)
Today youʼll drive deeper into the Gobi (approx. 5-6 hours) to reach Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, home to the dramatic Yolyn Am Gorge. A short hike through this deep canyon reveals icy patches that linger year-round. Watch for ibex, pikas, and lammergeiers (vultures with a flair for soaring).
Accommodation: Ger camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Khongor Sand Dunes (Singing Dunes)
The desert opens up today as you head west to the massive Khongor Els (approx. 5-6 hours). These dunes stretch over 180 km, and climbing one feels like conquering the world.
Meet a camel herding family, learn how they survive in the desert, and hop on a two-humped Bactrian camel for a short ride. As the sun sets, climb to the top of a dune, close your eyes, and listen to the wind make the sand “sing.ˮ
Accommodation: Ger camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Life among the dunes
A slower day to take it all in. Wake up to the sight of golden dunes, enjoy a relaxed breakfast, and decide your pace: trek across the sands, visit a local oasis, or simply sip milk tea and watch the horizon shimmer. By evening, the dunes will glow like gold. Bring your camera, youʼll want to capture it.
Accommodation: Ger camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs)
Drive east (approx. 4-5 hours) to Bayanzag, also known as the Flaming Cliffs, a name that makes perfect sense once you see them blaze at sunset. This is where dinosaur fossils were first discovered in the 1920s. Walk among the red sandstone formations, explore the nearby Saxaul forest, and watch the desert light work its evening magic.
Accommodation: Ger camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6: Baga Gazriin Chuluu (Granite Rocks)
Head north toward Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a striking landscape of granite canyons and boulders scattered across the steppe (approx. 6-7 hours). Also called the Mongolian Grand Canyons.
Stretch your legs with a hike among the rocks, visit meditation caves once used by monks, and soak up the peace, itʼs a perfect final night in the wild.
Accommodation: Ger camp
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7: Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast, itʼs time to head back to Ulaanbaatar (approx. 5-6 hours). Youʼll pass familiar stretches of open steppe, now somehow richer, because youʼve lived the desert, not just seen it.
Accommodation: Drop-off hotel
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
